How we move heavy safes

Moving a heavy safe requires the right equipment and a plan for the specific location. Our crews use specialized safe-moving equipment such as tandem hydraulic dollies to lift and transport large safes while keeping them stable and controlled. Before moving the safe, we protect it with heavy-duty moving blankets and secure the dollies together with a heavy-duty strap to help keep the safe supported throughout the move.
Standard household moving equipment is not always designed to handle the extreme weight of a large safe. Using an appliance dolly or furniture-moving equipment that is not rated for the load can increase the risk of injury, damage to the safe and damage to floors, walls or door thresholds. Our crews use equipment selected for the weight, size and conditions of each safe move to help keep the safe and the property protected from pickup through delivery.
Using Ramps to Move a Safe
When stairs, steps or raised entrances are involved, ramps are often one of the safest and most efficient ways to move a heavy safe. We carry several types and sizes of ramps, including aluminum and fiberglass ramps, to accommodate different weights, heights and access conditions. When our crew arrives, we evaluate the safe, the entryway and the surrounding area to determine the safest ramp setup for the move.
Knowing the weight of a safe is important when selecting the proper dollies, ramps and trailer for the job. Our crews know the weight capacity of the equipment we use and match it to the requirements of each move. If the safe is older or its weight is unknown, we can weigh it with our portable scale. This allows us to confirm the safe’s actual weight and make sure we use the appropriate equipment to move it safely.

Moving a 1,800-Pound Gun Safe
This 1,800-pound gun safe was originally sitting on a pallet. After the customer sold the home, our crew was hired to remove the safe and transport it to storage. We carefully removed the safe from the pallet, protected it with heavy-duty moving blankets and used our tandem hydraulic dolly to lift and move it. The dolly is operated by two movers and has a combined lifting capacity of 3,960 pounds, giving us plenty of capacity to safely handle a gun safe of this size.
Although this 1,800-pound safe is extremely heavy, it is well within the capacity of our tandem hydraulic dolly. Once the safe was positioned for loading, we used a heavy-duty winch to pull it onto our low-profile trailer. After loading, the safe was secured using the trailer’s E-track tie-down system to help prevent movement during transportation.
Floor Protection for Heavy Safe Moves
Protecting the property is an important part of every safe move. Heavy safes can place tremendous pressure on hardwood, tile, laminate and other flooring, especially when the safe weighs hundreds or thousands of pounds. Depending on the job, our crews use floor protection such as Masonite panels, moving blankets and other protective materials to create a safer path for moving the safe through the home or business.
The type of floor protection we use depends on the safe’s weight, the flooring and the equipment needed for the move. Different dollies distribute weight across two, four or six wheels, which can significantly affect the amount of pressure placed on the floor. When additional protection is needed, we use materials such as steel sheets, aluminum sheets or plywood to distribute the weight and create a protected path for the safe.
